Teaching
I teach a field-based class on plant identification and taxonomy in the Fall. The course includes two weekend field trips and about 9 afternoons in the field. Students learn about 100 species common to northern Utah and how to use taxonomic keys to identify them. They learn another 40 or 50 species from the Great Basin, Colorado Plateau, and Mojave desert.

I also teach a Wildland Soils course for both undergraduate and graduate students. This course is a mix of lecture and hands on soil processing and data management and analysis.
Service
I serve as an editor for Plant and Soil and Biological Invasions and perform about a ten ad hoc reviews for scientific journals and professional organizations each year.

At the university level, I serve on various committees (safety, tenure, graduate, curriculum, etc.)
